Not entirely on topic, but if you are a fan of Chomsky, you may also appreciate the words of Stan Goff. He is not exactly a "leftist", but he offers a serious critique of our society, and is serious about making social change.

I've always thought of Goff as a leftist. His other website (home.igc.org/~sherrynstan/) carries the motto "Building a bridge between the left and the military." Thanks for posting that link. Stan Goff is fascinating!

Hes a socialist. However, he also has a strong libertarian leaning as well, which puts some of his ideas a little closer to Chomskys then to what I would consider a "leftist" at least in the US.

Goff is a bit more militant. He taught military science after all, and I believe he trained special forces.

With some sadness and with not the least desire to devalue the experiences I have had with comrades, nor to minimize the hard work, nor the consciousness and concience, nor the friendship of many comrades, I am herein announcing and explaining my definitive rejection of Marxism in its current organizational forms, be they called Marxist-Leninist or Trotskyist or Maoist.... I agree with him. Marx had some serious flaws in thinking that a dictatorship would turn power back over to the people. Lenninism was a step in the wrong direction, and Stalinist-Maoism is the worst aspects of these flaws taken to their extreme in the form of totalitarianism.

Thanks for the link. Goff is just demoralized. Hey - who can blame him? Any revolutionary socialist in Amerika who isn't demoralized isn't paying fucking attention. Unfortunatly Goff has taken the ridiculous position that if only some leftists had taken better positions or adopted a better theoretical outlook things would be different. I hate to go all historical-materialist, but that is just bullshit. The class-struggle isn't something you pull out of your arse just because you've got the right program. The class-struggle comes up from below - or not. Right now in the United States of America it is not. The reasons for this have little to do with the sorry state of the organized left, such as it is.

Since this is a list named after Chomsky, I'll just point out that Chomsky pretty much spelled out the problem in Manufacturing Consent. As long as the ruling class can afford to do so, it is much better for them to "manufacture consent" than it is to bust heads. This doesn't mean that the organized left isn't a sorry sack of shit - it just means that the overall low level (more like complete absence) of any real class struggle in the US isn't caused by the incorrect theoretical outlook of Marxists. Thank the Gods for the Tendency of the Rate of Profits to Decline! I just wish it would hurry the fuck up.
